Re: CHASSIS B.100.HK{Col. T. Harker - Sales} - Mr. MICHELIN.

With reference to our Sr/VA3/ET.14.2.38 concerning the crankshaft of this car which, we pointed out, has a good hardness figure, we could, if it should be considered advisable, true up the main journals by hand stoning and then finish them by lapping without, we think, seriously affecting the hardness figure.

You will, however, have observed from our memo that Nos. 3 & 4 journals have .002" ovality.

The only reason why we are suggesting the above is to keep down the cost of the job.

The approximate cost, to the Company, for carrying out the following operations to a crankshaft, in Paris, would be £.4.0.0:

1 Removing balance weights.
2 Regrinding main journals to .010" u/s.
3 Renitriding.
4 Cleaning crankshaft after renitriding.
5 Lapping in all journals after renitriding.
6 Re-fitting weights and rebalancing shaft as necessary.

CYLINDER BLOCK.

With reference to the P.S. at the foot of our memo, the mouth of N°I bore is cracked on the non pressure side as indicated on the attached sketch. The colour of the bore in the vicinity of the crack indicates that it is not of recent date.

The mouth of N°4 bore is also cracked on the same side, more or less vertically for about 3/4". This was detected with the aid of a magnifying glass.

We cannot account for the above and cannot trace any sign of a shock.

The above cracks, as far as we are able to ascertain, were not observed when we dismantled the engine on the 2.4.37 (Report given below).

Please let us know if you require the block for examination.
