Rolls-Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Mr. Grylls,

Very many thanks for your letter dated the 21st March, with reference to the Rolls-Royce gearbox which we have on test at the present time.

I rather thought from our discussion at Derby, that with the alterations made to make the third speed an overdrive gear, the same casing was utilised. We would be very pleased indeed if you could make arrangements to put through for us a special pair of third speed gears to give the desired ratio and for the purpose of test we do not see any reason why these should be ground, and any means which you can use to expedite delivery would be much appreciated.

On checking over your G.81777 for the gearbox which we have at the present time, it would appear that the gear ratios are roughly :-

1st - 2.99
2nd - 1.96
3rd - 1.32
Top - 1 - 1

We are at the present time utilising an axle ratio of say 5.4/1, and you will thus see that if we wish to obtain a comparable overall performance some modification will have to be made.
