In reply to Mr Johnson's memo 20th Oct. 10/ 20th October 1910. X728 Mr. Johnson. Re attached memo referring to Patents. I should like to put all the facts in connection with this matter before you because Mr. Nadin tells me he did not state the case fully and I suggest that your attached memo is the result of this incompleteness. Mr. Royce informed me that he wished me to prepare the necessary matter for protecting the patentable parts of the 1600 axle and also that he wished me to do this work in future; I was not at all clear in what form this material was usually supplied to our agents and, consequently, I applied to Mr. Nadin for copies of some of our recent patents, and also for copies of the material for these patents, as sent to the agents, explaining to Mr. Nadin that I required these in order that I might conform to the usual outline adopted. Mr. Nadin did not supply this material but informed me that what was wanted was a description of the axle parts on which we wished to claim, including a specification of the claims we wished to make. I wrote these and sent them, untyped, to Mr. Nadin. These were typed and returned to me with two suggestions (by Mr. Bailey) for further claims, which I wrote, (upside down text at bottom) R.R. 235a.
