HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} C. to SC. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} R1/M13.7.32. X235. SHOCK DAMPERS - SINGLE VALVE TYPE. Let us bring this in line with the double valve - RR. type - by the following modifications: (1) No grooves in piston because they may take in air. (2) Fit vent passages from the very top of each end to a filter, then a restriction of about .025 dia., and then a non-return ball. Fit lubrication to the bearing after test. The single way valve is very easy to damp, and we should overdo this at first as shewn on drawing, and if it upsets the efficiency of the damper as seen by the diagram it can be reduced, but it should at least shew if the source of the noise is the vibration of the valve. The weight given for the J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} 3. damper in HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}8/AD8732., is misleading in that no mention is made of the fact that the damper body is cast iron instead of aluminium as for our standard dampers. The change from aluminium to C. I. was made at the suggestion of the Expl. Dept. (see HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}1/ME3131.) and no further report has been received modifying the original information. It now appears however that aluminium is satisfactory for the body, with a cast iron piston. Someone should be continually on this test as we find that in the past our suggestions have been overlooked.
