Steering Pivots. - X.168
A report was sent in a week ago on the tests of a pivot which was undersize in the bottom of the U. section. The thickness was .28", the thickness should be .312" but they are passed at .29".

The pivot tested lasted for 42 hours 25 mins before breaking. It was a Vickers forging heat treated by Vickers.

We are now testing a second pivot which is .28" thick in the base of the U. section and this has run 26 hours so far and has just started to show a crack. This one is a Hughes Johnson forging, heat treated by ourselves. I do not know whether the steel or the treatment is different or whether the dies of the two makers give different sections
