20HP. STEERING. VS{J. Vickers}430

Thank you for your wire of this morning giving a copy of one from R.{Sir Henry Royce} of the 5th inst. We conclude from this that R's wishes are to stiffen up the latest large tube steering column so that it is satisfactory, and we also understand that as a result of your experiments you do not consider in the present form that it is stiff enough.

We should like to do a stepped dash similar to EAC, but it will be realised that this is rather a long job both in the design and in the subsequent introduction on to the chassis. We have therefore thought that we should be carrying out R's intentions by providing additional stiffness with the existing dashboard. We have not decided exactly what form this will take, but we have several proposals which seem possible, and we expect to send you a design in the course of 2 or 3 days.

We have not previously heard of this telegram, and the latest information about the 20HP steering in our possession was memo. Rl/M29126., item 2. of which refers to information we have sent you some time, namely, the large column standing off the dashboard alone, without the aid of the instrument board.

It will be seen from the above proposals that we are under the impression that the flexing of the steering column takes place in the column itself, and that we want to carry the support further up the column in the same way as is done on EAC. If there is any evidence that the flexibility is taking place somewhere else we should like to know. Some time ago R.{Sir Henry Royce} instructed us to ask you to try where the deflections were coming from on our steering columns. We do not remember having had any report on it?
