The best way to do this was under discussion for some time, a mock up design for applying the High Power head to the existing Bentley engine (as was done with the O.H. camshaft) being prepared. After consideration we decided that a more economical procedure would be to incorporate the project in a new design of engine as an alternative to our present type, so that if successful the work would not have to be done again before it was fit for production. In Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}4/AP.16.2.37. we suggested that the design ought to be costed.

After the reorganisation, Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} considered the project and agreed that it was worth a full scale trial. In conference with Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} and Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} we pointed out that Bentley 50 unit was going to be designed so that it could be either conventional or have a High Power head.

This design is now three parts completed. At frequent intervals Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} and Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} have been informed (see list of memos) in writing of the progress of the job.

If any further information is required, the attached list shows the inter-departmental literature that has been circulated on the subject, which is available in the Exp. files.

At the last Conference we heard the first expression of opinion on the High Power project which has been made outside the Engineering Dept.

We do not know of anyone having shown any interest in costs other than those engaged on the project.

CAR SINGLE CYLINDER WORK

Our views on this, expressed in Us/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}25/KW. 1.9.36., have not altered. We have never gone in for this type of investigation on anything like the scale of the Aero side.

The figures for single cylinder cost in the Experimental expenses file are:-

1936 £545. 0. 0
1937 £391. 7.10 (8 months).

We are prepared to double these figures in order to include every incidental expense. The similar
