On Monday, the 30th June, two engines were lifted out of the boat and sent to the Rolls Royce works at Derby to be completely dismantled for internal examination. Notwithstanding the fortnight's immersion in water and mud, all parts were intact and in excellent condition, with the exception of the carburetter floats, which were crushed. As is well known, the floats are made buoyant by sealed air inside a thin casing. The external pressure imposed by the head of water as the boat sank would crush the floats long before the boat reached the 200 ft depth. The engines can be assembled immediately, and after cleansing the parts of water and oil and will run as perfectly as they did before the accident, the only replacement being new carburetter floats. | ||
