TIMING BENSPORT ENGINES.

Following tests carried out on C. XI unit.

(1) Tappets .020; positions inlet opening and closing, turning engine forward from flywheel found to be within 10° of positions when turning engine backwards from flywheel, spring drive remaining central all the time (Damping 16 lbs. approx).

(2) Spring drive was then wound up forwards by starting handle. On being released only returned 2/5 of way to central position.
Timing from flywheel was then this amount out.

(3) After running engine for half a minute the spring drive centralised itself.

Recommendations for timing engines:-

This is originally carried out with only rear half of slipper wheel fitted. Two of the driving springs should be replaced by distance pieces, or alternatively a fitting is required that can be temporarily slipped on to lock the spring drive.

When the engine is complete it would help to mark T.D.C. on the timing case and fan pulley with spring drive in central position. No errors could arise when checking engines on test beds.
