Re Special Thermo-couple with one element of cast iron - for use at a maximum temperature of 700°C.

A couple suited to your purpose can be made with "Eureka" resistance wire, which can be obtained from the electricians' stores.
Tests carried out at a temperature of 750°C with a couple 15" long made from 18 gauge wire spot welded to a 5/16" rod of cast iron gave an E.M.F. of 38 millivolts.
