A considerable amount of difficulty has been experienced in endeavouring to cure a complaint from Captain H.A. Taylor, of Sutton Hall, Thirsk, Yorks - Chassis 91-GN - of firing in the silencer after the Owner has lightly applied his foot to the accelerator pedal. We have made several attempts to overcome this complaint at W., and the Owner's address, and eventually he agreed to let us have his car at the Works from Thursday July 2nd until Saturday July 4th. The following work was done to try and overcome this difficulty, but we were unable to make any improvement:- (1) Cylinder head and induction pipe changed. (2) Carburetter throttle examined and re-bedded. (Previously this had been changed). (3) Exhaust heated throttle fitted. (4) Latest type rear silencer with sliding joint modification fitted. (5) Different rated accelerator pedal springs fitted. (6) Choke tube in carburetter, as per Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} In conjunction with Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} we tested Phantom II chassis in the Test Dept. and Phantom II body cars in the Repair Dept., and driving under the same conditions as Captain Taylor by slightly opening the throttle, explosions were noticeable in the Rear Silencer. I should be glad if the Experimental Dept. could give me any further advice in the event of this owner complaining again, as he is a very difficult gentleman to deal with, and I am afraid we shall have a repetition of this complaint.
