contd :- -3- just on the instant of the car stopping, release the brakes. If this is done, it avoids the passengers being jerked, and the car comes to rest smoothly. On cars fitted with four-wheel brakes, the hand brake is to be used for holding the car when stationary. The brakes operated by the foot pedal are capable of holding the car when on the longest descent. Special care must be taken when driving on snow and ice, for instance, if chains are fitted to the rear wheels and the four brakes are applied, it is practically certain that the front wheels will lock first. It is recommended that when it is necessary to fit chains, two should be fitted to the rear wheels and one should be fitted to one of the front wheels.
