X.3032 - Re Aluminium Alloys X.3039

With reference ti the above, we have received the reports of the variation of yield point, elongation, and maximum stress with temperature, and of the other characteristics of the various aluminium alloys which have been tested.
We now only require to know the casting characteristics, that is to say, with what relative degree of ease we are able to get sound, useful casting from these alloys.
We noticed that you mentioned there had been some scrapers amongst the specimens, and we thought that this might indicate to some extent how one metal compared with another, if the specimens were scrapped through being bad castings.
We find, however, that the crankcase metal did not show up well judged in this light, and we look upon that particular alloy as one that is not difficult to cast.
Would you please, therefore, in accordance with Mr. Royce's wishes, report on this last remaining characteristic as it will determine which alloys will be selected for practical test on the engine.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
