1305 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}8/JH. 5th. December, 1939. Toledo Woodhead Ltd., Toledo Spring Works, SHEFFIELD.1. For the attention of Mr. Frank Woodhead. Dear Sirs, Road Spring Development. This Company has decided to continue chassis development during the War, only on a reduced scale. We hope that you will be able to help us in this so that after the War we can start production immediately. There is one problem outstanding with the grooved section spring, and that is interleaving. The situation now is, that we can make interleaving stand up to wear, if we are prepared to put up with noise; but that if we eliminate noise we cannot make the interleaving sufficiently durable. We believe we wrote you to this effect just before the War. Can we make use of your spring scragging rig for further development? The tests we would like to make are as follows - (1) Run spaldite interleaving absolutely dry until it creaks. Note number of reversals. (2) Pack the grooves with grease and repeat, using the water splash for 80% the numbers of reversals in (1), then allow to dry and see when creaking starts.
