BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} FROM DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} Copy to BG. HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}1/M15.11.29. Y5230. CHINA EXHAUST SYSTEM. ORIGINAL Herewith we send N. schemes 2983/4. - alternative schemes for the front expansion box of the China exhaust system. The one which R.{Sir Henry Royce} favours is no doubt N. sch. 2983. - the aluminium box - but we believe the Exp. Dept. have doubts as to whether this will stand up under all conditions, and we have therefore supplied a steel one for the event of it being necessary. As regards the manufacture of the latter there evidently are several ways in which it could be welded up. We think however as regards strength and convenience, that it is probable you will prefer to make it as indicated on the drawing, namely, two shallow caps welded to a piece of tube.
