Re: Rear end of "SS{S. Smith}" Chassis.

Referring to our conversation of yesterday, the position is that the scheme as on 18.EX. with the fitted trunk and second wheel at the back, is very nice but will only appeal to a comparatively small number of purchasers who would be satisfied with a small body.

When we come to the larger type of body as on 19.EX. with two wheels at the back, it appears to be impossible to have accommodation for luggage, which of course is not a saleable proposition.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} has already approved (in case of necessity) of having one wheel at the back and one at the side, and Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} has drawn up a suggested luggage grid for use in those circumstances. This arrangement however, precludes the possibility of having a fitted trunk which is becoming more and more popular, and we are therefore rather anxious to obtain R's approval to two spare wheels in front in cases where customers insist on a fitted trunk, and I should be glad if you would test a car with weights arranged to the equivalent of two spare wheels at the front and provision for luggage at the back, on the lines of a scheme which has been drawn out at WW. and a copy of the print of which I will send you within the course of the next few days. If you are then able to tell us that this is satisfactory, we shall presumably have to arrange to approach R.{Sir Henry Royce} on the subject.
