MACHINES FOR CLAN FOUNDRY.

We have gone into the question of the justification of the machines we have asked for for the Clan Foundry, For two months before the war a very careful check was kept of all machining done in the Works for the experimental car sections.

Exclusive of machining done in the experimental, the following were the average machine hours per week for each general type of machine:-

Centre lathe - 124
Hand turret - 832
Milling - 300
Boring - 138
Grinding - 774
Gear cut - 29
Drilling - 91

IF we take a 96 hour week as being a fully occupied machine we get justification for the following machines

Hand turret - 8.7
Milling - 3.1
Boring - 1.43
Centre lathes - 1.30
Drilling - 1.0
Grinding - .54
Gear cutting - .30

The two sections where the machines might not be fully employed are grinding and gear cutting if we take the work that used to be done for us by the Works only. On the grinding machine, however, more experimental work will be done on it than anything else and therefore we consider that it should be located at the Clan.
