OY-1 x8040. August 28, 1929. TO: Mr. Beaver. cc Mr. Ross. Mr. Bagnall Mr. Burton Experimental Dept. Mr. Hives (England) FROM: Mr. Olley. PISTON - SECTION 5040. Mr. Casserly wondered at our still using an un-strutted piston, and said that to his knowledge we are the only makers today in the U. S. doing so. He added that Chevrolet had encountered nothing but trouble before using the strutted (Bohnalite) piston and (beyond detail trouble at first in getting the wristpin bores right) have proved exemplary service from the strutted pistons in over two years of use at the Proving Ground. We anticipate a detail change to pistons shortly to use Perfect Circle oil-retaining rings, or their equivalent, and it would seem wise to embody Invar struts with the same experimental change. I anticipate that proper trial of the type will cost not less than $1500, including patterns, necessary tools, and the inevitable adjustment of skirt diameters. Do you not think that we should proceed with this even at a rather high first cost, in view of the probable great benefits in production and maintenance ? OY. | ||
