H4469 RECEIVED NOV 20 1928 RB {R. Bowen} By. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c to R. {Sir Henry Royce} c to Rg. {Mr Rowledge} c to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} H14/EA20.11.28. Laboratory. Re Nitrocased Steel. Further to our note M626 and Ey14/G.19.11.28. The old Upton-Lewis standard condition of test was found to give rather irregular results, owing to the grips tending to bite in. We do not happen to have done recent Upton-Lewis tests (i.e. under the new standardised condition) on Nickel Chrome or nickel steel. We are now doing some of the former steel, for comparison, at 285 Brinell, with the cased Nitralloy. The case of Nitralloy was found to contain 1.93% (average for 0.025" from surface) and the core 0.097% Nitrogen. Were the case not so brittle it would have numerous applications, and the further samples to be submitted may, we hope, be an improvement. If possible, we should like some small square or flat test pieces (about 3/4" x 3/4" x 1/2") for detail examination after casing. Hc | ||
