NOTES ON MATTERS DISCUSSED DURING VISIT OF MESSRS. BARRINGTON AND HIVES TO WEST WITTERINGHenry Royce's home town ON 23rd INST.

STARTING AND LIGHTING BATTERY. X.664

Mr. Clark should go to the Exide, Tudor, and other firms and without disclosing the object of his visit, inspect the processes of plate pasting and forming. Stationary batteries usually have formed positive plates, and it is probable that the Tudor people (who deal largely with stationary work) use this method. Trouble has been experienced with the Exide battery due to paste falling out and shorting the plates, Mr. Royce thinks the Tudor people, if they do not paste their plates, and if they meet our requirements in other respects, may provide a more reliable battery.

CONDOR ENGINE. X.2081/2596

In addition to the conditions specified in his recent note on "Condor" engine, Mr. Royce agrees to the delivery of ten Condors with the original type cranks; these cranks, however, to be from drop forgings of sound material and heat treatment. Mr. Day should send to Wittering the design of camshaft casing gland joint suggested by him that has been tested.

AMERICAN PETROL TANK. X.3684/X.3401

The scheme approved of by Mr. Royce for providing a spare two gallons of fuel in the tank is to take the existing petrol cock off the chassis, make a cock with two ways and a shut-off position, and place it on the petrol tank. It should be put in communication with two pipes; one which will empty the tank all but two gallons, and the other which will completely empty the tank. The handle of the cock should project over the filler cap in the spare two gallons position so that the driver after filling his tank will be induced to leave the cock handle in such a position that the spare fuel will not be used up.
The pipe which is supposed to completely empty the tank, may dip into a little pocket or not as desired, so as to make the whole of the fuel available. Mr. Royce thinks that it is almost possible to unscrew the present large flange on the tank, and fit a new unit embodying the features aforementioned. The petrol tank should be fitted with a magnetic level indicator of the ordinary type.
With this system of arranging the tank, the delivery filter should be transferred to the carburettor floatchamber, while the present ingoing filter should be retained.
