HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) X3066. R4/M24.4.31. [STAMP: RECEIVED 29 APR 1931] C. to SG.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} C. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} STANDARDISATION SHEETS. (1) P. 2. RUBBER IN STEERING COLUMN BRACKET, & REMOVAL OF REAR ENGINE FEET. (2) P. 2. LONGER SKIRT PISTON. The above two sheets I have signed and attach herewith. (1) Regarding the former I agree as a very temporary measure. With my 18-EX. the cure was 100 times worse than the curse. Perhaps the difference is in the body mounting, thus, on a subframe the body may not boom, but will jelly if the feet are removed, whereas a body built on the chassis booms badly but does not jelly if the feet are removed, because the body is providing the necessary torsional stiffness, until it breaks up, as I understand happens on a 10,000 miles test. (2) With regard to the latter, there have been many modifications to keep the lower part stiffer, such as raising the pin nearer the stiff part and ribs. The lower part of the pistons have always been too flexible. In the face of booms and pistons being the cause we must be very careful about increase in weight of pistons. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
