Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY. 27th. November, 1935. Dear Sirs, Reverting to your enquiry of the 16th. instant, regarding hardened Piston Rings. These are purchased from The British Piston Ring Company, of Coventry, in the hardened condition; the hardness being between the limits of C.35 - C.45 Rockwell. The analysis of material is said by the Makers to be as follows :- Total Carbon 3.5% max. Combined " .45 to .8%. Silicon. 1.8 to 2.3% max. Sulphur. .12% max. Phosphorus. .8% max. Manganese. .6 to 1.2%. Nickel. .5% to .8%. Chrome. .5% to .8%. Cont'd.......
