X30146 Lucas Dynamo. E.575.

When Mr.Ireland, of the Lucas Electrical Co.Ltd. was here on Wednesday last, 6th inst. it was suggested that the substitution of an aluminium end frame for the cast iron end frame formerly used in this dynamo has made it very difficult to obtain noiseless running and with a view to ascertain whether this is so, Mr.Ireland took with him 8 dynamos with aluminium end frames which had failed to pass our test, the intention being to fit cast iron end frames to these machines in substitution of aluminium and test them out for noise.

We have received a letter from the Lucas Elect.Co. stating that the question of noise has been thoroughly investigated at their Works and they can say definitely that the use of a malleable iron casting for the commutator end bracket greatly improves the silent running of the machine.

Mr.Ireland pointed out that the aluminium end frame had been adopted at the suggestion of Mr.Royce and in proof of this, the Lucas Elect.Co. have now sent us copy of Mr.Royce's letter ref.- R8/G15.3.20, to Mr.Clarke, in which the following paragraph appears:-

"The weight of the dynamo is of considerable
"importance. I found a very heavy iron casting
"inside. As far as we can see, it could be of
"aluminium, as it would save some weight."

This was communicated to the Lucas Elect.Co. by Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} and the Lucas Elect.Co. state they wrote us on the 25th March last pointing out that they were altering the end frames from cast iron and that the dies were already in hand for producing them in aluminium, and to these remarks they received no objection from us.

As the Lucas Elect.Co. have satisfied themselves that the aluminium end frames are responsible for the difficulty of quietening the dynamos, they are proceeding to manufacture these frames of cast iron with all haste and hope [struck out] to be able to deliver dynamos so fitted early this week and will be pleased to learn the results we obtain when tested on our testing rig. They ask us to notify them of our approval of this action and I shall be glad to have your comments thereon as soon as possible.

Junction Boxes. The Lucas Elect.Co. state they have also looked into the question of junction boxes and have taken steps to ensure that the fuse holders will fit correctly in the clips. They will also endeavour to send a consignment of these early this week.

Wd.{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}
