W. Robotham Esq.,
Messrs. Rolls-Royce, Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Mr. Robotham,

Thanks for your letter of 18th. October. I shall be pleased to call on you at Derby on Monday 28th. October, and I shall bring with me Mr. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Dickson who has charge of the Tyre Design Section of our Development Department. Owing to enemy action the railway transport in and around Birmingham is, I believe, somewhat difficult, and trains both north and south to Birmingham have been running anything up to 1.1/2 hours late.

The Railway Company states that some improvement can be hoped for, but nevertheless I fear there is a risk of our reaching Derby at some time later than 11.36 a.m. If we arrive promptly, we shall come straight out to Nightingale Road, but if we are so late that there seems little hope of doing anything before lunch I shall telephone you from the Station. Anyway, we trust that Mr. Hardy and you, and also Mr. Grylls if he is available, will join us for lunch.

Yesterday we sent to Derby by passenger train, and marked for your attention, 8 - 6.50/16 Silent Tyres in the present pattern and 2 tyres from the original mould with the five-barred pattern. The last mentioned only differ from those you originally barred, in that the non-skid depth has been reduced. You will recollect that we machined metal for this mould in order to provide a light tread tyre for your Corniche Model. We trust these tyres will arrive in time for you to make some preliminary tests before next Monday.

We shall also bring with us a complete record showing the modifications made to our Silent Tread pattern, throughout the course of our joint experiments early in 1939.

Yours sincerely,
THE AVON INDIA RUBBER COMPANY LIMITED.

J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} Mackay
DEVELOPMENT MANAGER AND CHIEF CHEMIST.
