1181 Experimental Dept. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}5/MH.{M. Huckerby} 28th. May 1938. The Gandy Belt Mfg. Co. Ltd., Wheatland Works, Seacombe, CHES. For the attention of Mr.Ikin. Dear Sirs, We regret the delay in sending you a report on your 400 G.M.3 and have pleasure in enclosing three photographs of our test rig, and some results in graph. Referring to the graphs, you will see from the µ-speed curves that the lining is likely to be silent when cold but might squeak or judder when hot. You will also see on the µ - temperature curves that this is what happened. The µ-temperature curves are taken under conditions which are a close approximation to ordinary running conditions. The inclusion of graphite in your lining 400.M appears wholly beneficial and has improved it considerably but as we have previously explained we do not consider the bending of this lining to be satisfactory when warm and it is asking too much of the graphite to overcome its deficiencies. We are not further interested in the 400 class of lining. Your best lining appears to be 'D' and a graphite inclusion in this would be worth testing. The quantity of graphite should be as great as possible. We spent some time after Mr.Ikin's visit modifying the rig to eliminate vibrations and it is now working much better. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
