To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from EH. X.2935. EH1/LG6.12.18. X 3320 RE ATTACHED REPORT ON CARBURETTER TESTS ON "HAWK" ENGINE There is something radically wrong with the tests taken with the standard Claudel carburetters which were fitted to these engines. The figures given shew that the consumption at 1350 R.P.M. full throttle was 9 gals 1 1/4 pts. per hour. This is nearly twice as much as it should be. The consumption should be 5 gals per hour at 1350 R.P.M. full throttle; this is based on an average of 50 "Hawk" engines. The extreme limit we were allowed by the A.I.D. was 5.3 gals perhour at 1350 R.P.M. The consumption is so bad that we do not think the engine would run properly using that amount of petrol, we suggest there must have been something wrong with the way the consumption was measured. We have never heard of the Cox carburetter. We should be pleased if particulars of it could be sent on to us, although the test with the Cox carburetter is no better than we can guarantee with the Claudel. We consider we ought to let Mr. Northey know that the consumption given for the "Hawk" is entirely wrong, so as to correct any impression that the standard "Hawk" engine as delivered, was so bad for consumption.
