MARINE AIRCRAFT EXPERIMENTAL ESTABLISHMENT, FELIXSTOWE.

Aluminium Sparking Plug Washers.

"D"

1. Introductory.

This report deals with further tests of the solid type of aluminium sparking plug washer dealt with in M.A.E.E. Report No. F/Eq/69 dated December, 1931.

2. Description.

The washers, which are shown in Fig.1, are turned from aluminium bar and are grooved on the upper and lower surfaces, and are symmetrical in section.

3. Range of investigation.

A number of washers have been in normal use over varying periods on air-cooled and water-cooled aero engines and water-cooled motor boat engines.

Their suitability in comparison with copper and asbestos washers has been assessed under the following heads:-

(a) Susceptibility to corrosion and influence on sparking plug corrosion.

(b) Possibility of fitting on more than one occasion and durability generally.

(c) Gastightness.

4. Tests carried out and their results.

Thirty washers were fitted to various engines, and Table 1 shows the conditions experienced during test. The two washers fitted on the Jaguar IV.C. had originally been fitted to the Panther engine. On examination it was found that the washers were in remarkably good condition. Of the thirty tested, one
