FELT GLANDS ON VALVES.

We thank you for your HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AILL/LG26427.

We should now like to know if these felt glands remain effective after ten, twenty, or forty, thousand miles.

We have the impression that you once shewed us some of these glands which had hardened off into a kind of horn after about 20,000 miles. We should imagine that in this condition they lose their flexibility and effectiveness in reducing the oil consumption. It is a possibility that as the valve gear is now made it tends to collect oil and drain it into the spindle without the glands fitted. Better results might be obtained as regards oil consumption without glands, by tapering off the top of the valve guide nearly to a knife edge, and preventing the oil from being collected by the valve spring washer.

Perhaps you would kindly let us have your further remarks.

E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer}
