| THE SUNDAY TIMES, SEPTEMBER. 2nd 1934 Motoring TOURIST TROPHY RACE WON BY SECONDS SUPERB VICTORY FOR DODSON — HALL LOSES THRILLING DUEL GREAT EFFORT BY BRIAN LEWIS By H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} SYMONS BELFAST, Saturday. The R.A.C. International Trophy Race, run at the gates of Belfast this afternoon, was the most thrilling of a long series. After a magnificent drive in the face of desperate opposition, C. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} P. Dodson won, on handicap, by the narrow margin of 17 sec. He drove a M.G. Magnette, and averaged 74.65 m.p.h. Second place was taken by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} R.{Sir Henry Royce} Hall on one of the new Bentleys at 78.40 m.p.h., and third place by T. S. Fotheringham, driving an Aston Martin. The Aston Martin cars also won the team prize. The outstanding feature of the race was the desperate duel in the closing stages between E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} R.{Sir Henry Royce} Hall and the Hon. Brian Lewis in a 4 1/4-litre Lagonda. For lap after lap the two big cars raced wheel to wheel, but at last the greater weight of the Lagonda told, and Lewis had to stop to change his tyres as the result of so much fierce corner work. This duel was by far the most thrilling that has ever been seen in this race. Outstanding among the many fine performances was that of the privately owned 3 1/2-litre Bentley, entered and driven by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} R.{Sir Henry Royce} Hall. At the end of the first two hours' running he led the race, as indeed he had from the very beginning, at the wonderful average speed of 80.44 m.p.h. This is the first time that one of the new Bentley's, built by Rolls-Royce, Ltd., at Derby, has taken part in a race of any description. It was a model of consistency, running with absolute reliability and easily the fastest car in the race, irrespective of engine size. After 13 laps of the 13 2-3 miles THE VICTOR'S REWARD C. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} P. Dodson, who won the Tourist Trophy race, wearing the laurel wreath. | ||
