The invention relates to engines having forced charge and fuel injection and seeks to apply the advantages of cylinder cooling experienced in two-stroke engines. For this purpose both inlet [handwritten correction, 'exit' is crossed out] and exhaust valves are left open together for at least 80º of crank angle before and after top dead centre, exhaust valve opening during expansion stroke and inlet during exhaust stroke.
