-2- Harrison Radiator Division articles would be very welcome - the backwardness of the British component manufacturer when compared with his American cousin is something to marvel at! We are changing over from the first thermostat system which we proposed to use (i.e. thermostat with permanently open bypass) as the small size of bypass which was necessitated in order to avoid material reduction in the cooling of the car results in excessive water pressures under the thermostat valve head - pressures up to 50 lbs/sq.in. being obtained at maximum engine revs. This pressure caused the bellows bottom plate and supporting frame to collapse and increased warming up times - we are therefore changing to the thermostatically shut off bypass type, using a 3/4" bypass pipe. Your information re fan belts is greatly appreciated - again we are up against the difficulty of getting belts which are up to your standard. Would you be good enough to get the following belt manufacturers to each send us three belts to drawing EB.221 attached, and two belts to drawing Ex.S.194. attached. We will forward them official orders for these belts if you will send us their addresses when replying to our oil cooler letter. The manufacturers are Messrs Goodyear, Gates, Dayton, and Goodrich. With regard to your remarks on corrosion inhibitors, we shall certainly try out sodium chromatic as suggested by you - we are obtaining some satisfactory results with a corrosion inhibitor which is used by Messrs Vauxhalls and which we believe is a phenolic derivative of coal tar. Again thanking you for your help and information, - we are looking forward to hearing from you shortly on the subject of oil coolers and thermostats, as the former at any rate is a very pressing matter at the moment. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
