Mr. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} W. Hives,
Rolls Royce, Limited,
Derby, England.

My dear Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}:

Yesterday we cabled congratulations on the Schneider. Everyone here is most interested in "how it's done", especially after seeing what a two year old model of the R engine can do on water.

The Mechanics joint people have been looking at the P II propeller shaft drawings and are astonished that you can get by with a diameter of only 2 1/4" for a length of 64", and a maximum speed in excess of 3000 r.p.m. They contend that this shaft must go well past its whirling speed. They would make it 3 1/4" diameter and taper-swage the ends to about 2".

I have not worked it out myself but thought you would be interested, since if you do get any high-speed roughness, this would probably be the cause.

Yours very truly,

Maurice Olley
