We should like to know whether you consider that when you have done all you can to get the tappets quiet, they are more noisy than the standard camshaft. PETROL GAUGE. We have come to the conclusion that we cannot damp the needle of the petrol gauge but shall have to damp the float in the tank by means of baffles. We are sending out to you an undamped head so that you will be able to get some experience on this. BRAKE THUMPS ON THE 25 HP. We are concerned because we are repeatedly running into brake thumps on our latest 25 HP. fitted with the Hancock brake shoe. We know that these shoes require more clearance than the standard and we know that the easiest way to bring up brake thumps is to put more clearance in the front brake shoes, therefore we think that these two facts are interconnected. We should like to use the dashpot to reduce this tendency to thump and you could probably find out something about it on 19-EX in France by making your brakes thump and seeing if you can make the dashpot work both ways and so improve matters. It seems illogical to use the damper only for one way operation and then use friction for the other way. TORQUE REACTION DAMPERS We note your remarks and will take steps accordingly. BONNET LOCKS. We note your remarks about bonnet locks. It is difficult to believe that the bonnet catches that you have fitted are too weak. We think that if something stronger than this is required it will require a jack to operate them. What we feel may be the difficulty is that 19-EX is the first Continental sprung car to run in France with the diamond engine mounting and the frame may twist more than on previous cars. We should like to know if slacking off the Hartfords improves matters and whether tightening the torque reaction dampers stiffens things up at all. One feature may be that the longer bonnet increases the effect of any twist. We should be interested to hear your opinion of it in due course.
