In order to obtain a free wheel drive
it is necessary to hold the reverse clutch permanently
out of operation which is brought about in the following
manner :-

A Bowden or other suitable control is attached
to a collar I. which can slide in the larger portion of
the bore of a hollow plunger 2. but is normally held in
the position shown by a comparatively strong spring 3.
retained by a plug 4. A comparatively light spring
5. tends to force the plunger 2. to the right.
One end of the operating fork R.{Sir Henry Royce} is formed
with an extension 6. which during the movement of the
fork passes across the end of the plunger 2, the position
of which is such that the projection 6. moves clear of
it just as the Humfrey-Sandberg reverse clutch is fully
disengaged. Assuming that the car is being driven
fixed, and it is required to change to free wheel drive,
the Bowden control is first released, which allows the
spring 5. to push the plunger 2, to the right until its
face makes contact with the projection 6. of the operating
fork R.{Sir Henry Royce} which checks further movement of the plunger.
The clutch pedal is then depressed carrying
the operating fork R.{Sir Henry Royce} forward until the projection 6.
clears the plunger 2. when the latter will immediately
move further to the right getting behind the projection 6.
On releasing the clutch pedal the band brake is first
released but further backward motion of the operating
fork R.{Sir Henry Royce} is prevented by the engagement of the extension 6.
with the plunger 2, the reverse clutch being consequently
held in the disengaged position although the spindle Q,
arm R.{Sir Henry Royce} and lever P. are free to rotate back until the
main clutch is fully engaged.
The sequence of operations on depressing and
