RE: Front Axle, Lub. of

In the earlier cars the ball studs were not drilled through to the top as shown and it was sometimes difficult for air to escape from the cross hole past the close-fitting bronze pads.

When taking an axle apart for any reason it is desirable to fit one of the later studs drilled right through as shown.

(5) Brake Actuating Shafts - See Sketch V.{VIENNA} It is necessary to see that the collar on the outer bronze bushing makes a good joint with the outer facing on the axle at "R", and that it is not pushed away from the axle by the set screw "S" which sets the adjustment of the pull-off spring.

Otherwise, oil entering the cavity of the actuating shaft at the inner end, will leak away at "R", without rising high enough to lubricate the outer bearing."

The stand-pipe "J" referred to in paragraph (3) was not fitted as standard to cars of the FL, PM, RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}, FM, and RP series. Whenever there is occasion to remove the pivots, therefore, a piece of 1/4" steel tubing should be cut to suitable length and installed in accordance with blueprint A-11645 which is attached.
