( C O P Y ) Re.Noisy Lay Shaft - Gear Boxes. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}15/W18214. [Handwritten in pencil]: Mr. Royce's remarks in red. One of our chief troubles with the above is that although the lack of noise may be quite satisfactory when run under normal conditions, i.e. gear box has obtained its normal heat under ordinary running conditions, when started up cold (ordinary weather) same "howls" rather badly; in fact, is quite objectionable. Such noise, however, only lasts for a short time, or a few miles running, i.e. until the gear box reaches its normal heat. [Handwritten in red]: This sounds like too close fitting. The matter is continually having attention, but definite cure has not yet been obtained. I have not considered the trouble of sufficient importance to condemn all such boxes, otherwise the output would be practically stopped, - at the same time I wish to bring this to your attention as it is a point which may cause complaints from customers, - in fact, it has already done so. [Handwritten in red in left margin]: Again these boxes cannot be as bad as no reverse pinion is running. Too close fitting or too thick oil. Skew gear is best suggestion. | ||
