1245 Rolls-Royce Ltd. Derby Sr/Gol/AD/21.6.38. To Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} We have been asked by the STANDARD COMPANY to supply, for a publicity and service pamphlet which they are getting up, a letter of appreciation concerning ESSO. As you know, we are on very good terms with the STANDARD people and, apart from the trouble experienced some time ago and eventually traced to sparking plugs, we have always been quite satisfied with ESSO in France. We are, therefore, in favour of giving the letter called for but, before doing so, we should like to have your views on the matter, and we give you hereunder translation of the proposed text of appreciation: "You have asked us to give you our opinion on the use of your super-fuel "ESSO" in ROLLS-ROYCE engines. "In reply to your demand, we have great pleasure in informing you that we readily admit that "ESSO", owing to its anti-detonating qualities, enables a maximum use of the well known features of power and smoothness of ROLLS-ROYCE engines. "Moreover, even after considerable running, we have never noticed with ESSO deterioration of any sort of the metals in contact with this super-fuel. "We, therefore, continue, at every opportunity, to recommend to our customers the use of ESSO, which can only prove of advantage." The above text has been submitted to us by the STANDARD COMPANY, and we understand that you have recommended ESSO in a similar way. We thank you in advance for your kind reply. Sr h.{Arthur M.
