Copy to Rev. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 8342 E.5/HP. 23rd October 1936. Messrs. Arens Controls Limited., 2, South Wharf, Praed Street, LONDON.W.2. Dear Sirs, Replying to your letter of the 20th inst. and with further reference to the point at issue, the trouble we are experiencing with the present Arens control fitted to the Phantom III chassis is the building up of excessive friction in operation. We therefore had in mind that a rigid tube would probably be more satisfactory as being once set for operation with minimum friction it would not be liable to be disturbed. The purpose for which we are using this control is that of varying the degree of damping on the suspension. The duty is very light, and we particularly require a very easily operated movement to avoid loss of motion and provide finger tip control on the steering column. We should, therefore, be glad to arrange for one of your fitters to visit our works, and build up control of the rigid outer tube type in situ. We should also like to know what you consider the minimum radius to be for free operation under light loading. Yours faithfully, For and on behalf of ROLLS-ROYCE Limited From A.G.ELLIOTT. CHIEF DESIGNER. | ||
