Vauxhall Gearbox. In view of the unusual drag on the 3rd. motion shaft on the Pheonix gearbox which has unlocated synchro cones we have obtained some particulars on the latest 3 speed Vauxhall box which has the same cone arrangement. In the Vauxhall the cone angle is 7½° and the cone end clearance approx. .075. The drag measured at the 3rd. motion shaft in neutral with a warm box was :- 1 lb. ft. at tick over rising to 4 lb. ft. at about middle revs. The gear change into 1st. 2nd or top was crash proof but rather nobbly. Frequently the gear lever could not be moved into 2nd. at all due presumably to some cross winding that Vauxhall's have not yet overcome. It is not peculiar to this particular car. 1st. gear was very noisy and 2nd. noiser than we should tolerate by a long way. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls} | ||
