We have got a lot of pictures of what is happening to the crankshaft of B.60 engines but so far have made little or no progress with regard to eliminating the spring drive. We shall shortly be running an endurance test with the largest crankshaft and the best damper that we know of, first with a chain and then with gears. If we are successful in neither case then we shall have to accept that 6-cylinder engines will have to have spring drives if we persist in running them above 4,000 r.p.m. If we find that we can only leave the spring drive off if we use chain we shall have to run a lot of miles before we accept it for production because Rover's were not entirely satisfied with the durability of their front end drives.
