X3438 Thrust of fan at various speeds. Further to our EFC1/T18.9.24, thrust tests of fans, as referred to on the last page of that report, have now been carried out. It may be remembered that, as there described, a fan and motor rigidly braced together are mounted on a revolving turntable with little friction, the axis of turning passing vertically through the motor in such a manner that the radius of action of the fan was 2 ft. 11.6". The angular motion of the combination is limited between suitable stops and the various speeds obtained as desired by suitable electrical control. The thrust of the fans is then directly measured by means of a carefully calibrated spring balance. The various fans so tested to date are as follows :- Fan tip dia. (1) Standard 40/50 six-bladed fan. 22" (2) Ditto with three blades removed. 22" (3) EAC. four-bladed fan. 23" (4) Hispano Fan. 17½" (5) High speed 40/50 fan - six blades. 22" (6) Goshawk Fan. Ditto with three blades removed. 22" (7) Goshawk fan. 18" The results of these thrust speed tests are exhibited on the attached photostat B, the curves being duly numbered in accordance with the above list.
