RADIATOR MOVEMENT 'SS{S. Smith}'.

We have refrained from report piecemeal on our tests on this complaint because we wished to get a more complete understanding of the phenomenon, before giving results of individual experiments which otherwise would only appear confusing.

We are now quite satisfied that the whole trouble is due to the critical axle period coinciding with a sympathetic frame period.

If we alter this frame period to any great extent the trouble is at once considerably reduced; it does not seem to matter very much whether we make the frame stiffer or weaker, any big alteration either way on the SS.{S. Smith} greater reduces the trouble.

The most peculiar coincidence appears to be that in the body subframe mounting, the cross in the frame and the four original very flexible rubber engine feet, we have the optimum combination for producing radiator movement and work whichever way we move we seem to get better.

(1) We started with the chassis in its original 'SS{S. Smith}' condition fitted with test kit. The steering was good and the radiator did not oscillate. We repeated the test on every other available chassis with the same result.

(2) We fitted a cast iron bar across the chassis
