A trouble which we experience occasionally is for
a minute piece of foreign matter to lodge on the valve seat and
be forced into the alum. when the valve tries to close. This can
put the damper out of action in one direction until it is removed.
G.W.H. states in his last report that he ran into this trouble and
had to dismantle an axle control damper, though he did not actually
find the material that caused the damper to go out of action.

It occurs to us that if the dampers had a consider-
able pressure velocity increase after the valve this trouble would
not be quite so serious as the damper, even with the valve open,
would retain a considerable proportion of its effectiveness.
