X8430 DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy{William Hardy}1/W.23.4.25. S E C R E T. STEERING BOX. E.A.C. ------------------ N. scheme 1981 attached shows the modifications to steering box required to accommodate ball and roller bearings to the rocker shaft. The scheme follows the lines of N.scheme 1747, the chief alteration being the use of two sets of short rollers instead of one set of long rollers. A Goshawk type nut is shown of 1.000" lead whitemetal lined, but the box casting should be shaped to provide for the existing cheese fixing, as well as the Goshawk nut, for the first castings. Pads are provided on the support bracket, to simplify fitting, as suggested by Experimental Dept. The centre distance is shown 10.250, and for reasonable clearances between the box and the frame for manufacture, it is thought that this reduced dimension is necessary. For existing cars, if desired, the centre distance may be made 10.350, although the frame flange may have to be cleared away slightly. Will BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} please check that the clearance round magneto drive shaft is as shown on this drawing. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Hdy.{William Hardy} | ||
