Bailey - Chief Engineer} RHSv E.1/HP.30.3.36. Chassis Engine Research and Development. The following report gives the present position of chassisengine research and development as determined at a meeting of the Design and Experimental departments, on the 20th inst. It is understood that two single cylinder beds will be available for carrying out the programme proposed. Phantom III. A Phantom III single cylinder, LeC.4338, has been designed and instructed incorporating larger valves and passages. It is understood that all the material for assembling this engine is now available. In the meantime Design will investigate the difficulties on the main engine attendant on introducing these larger valves and passages. This development is important both from the point of view of increasing the output of the present engine, and in respect to any future move for increasing the bore. Increased output would be useful for a Continental Model P.III. 25/30 HP. Engine. An analysis of power curve and valve port data has been prepared (drawing R.S.195) comparing the open and turbulent heads. This analysis indicates the desirability of trying a modified valve timing. Restriction on gas flow are shown in each case. An investigation will be carried out on the single cylinder universal unit fitted with Bentley cylinder head. Design will investigate the possibility of improving the valve port and passage areas on this engine. This development is one that should not be neglected as the first Wraith II chassis will be fitted with the 25/30 HP. unit. | ||
