(For the attention of Mr. Herton)

Dear Sirs,

We have carried out a careful comparison of the A.B. & C. gaskets with which you supplied us sometime ago in accordance with your letter ER/RG.{Mr Rowledge}19.2.38., and find that there is only a slight difference in them, C. gasket being the best.

Actually since oiling the faces before fitting there has been the biggest improvement against sticking.

In view of the above will you therefore supply us with the 12 gaskets 1/32" thick (C. type) which were held up until we had completed the comparison.

These are, of course, to be in accordance with the detail drawing EW.1014.

So far as our test results have gone we are very pleased with the gaskets, but before we could standardise, a gasket will have to be fitted to our special long distance car and complete a satisfactory test.

One feature we have against the adoption of the Klinger gasket is that, taking your quotation of 1/9d per gasket this represents an approximate saving of 6d per gasket, but with your cutter cost of £7 this would mean that we should have to produce 280 cars before we registered any saving, this number of cars representing a fairly long period of output.
