Joseph ------------------------- Owners Complaint Report No. W.363 ------------------------------- This car has a very bad history, particularly in respect of tappet trouble. According to our records, this is the third camshaft which has been fitted, the last two having been run on the solid tappet conversion scheme which has proved so unsatisfactory on other cars. The present camshaft has run only 6,000 miles, and several cams are torn very badly. Most of the tappets are in very bad condition. It is not worth trying to dress up this camshaft, and we recommend reverting to a hydraulic type camshaft in conjunction with the various modifications described in Mx{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}/SB{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}5/MG.14.8.39, viz:- 1. Raise oil level in tappet chambers by fitting 2" stand pipes. 2. Drill vent holes in tappet blocks. 3. Replace chromium plated tappets with 'Cloudburst' hardened tappets. 4. Fit a new set of floating rocker bushes 5. Add oil grooves to rocker eccentrics 6. Give hydraulic plungers .00275" to .003" clearance In addition to the foregoing, it is vitally important to clean out as thoroughly as possible the camshaft trough, as we believe there is now some of the debris from three camshafts lying about in the oil, and this will have a most destructive effect.
