SPECIFICATION OF PRODUCTION, INSPECTION, ADJUSTMENT AND TEST OF CUTOUT & REGULATOR.

CHASSIS :- Phantom III. Bentley.
TYPE :- R.R. Double Contact Cutout and C.A.V. Bosch B.Z.C.J.I. Regulator, mounted integral.

CUTOUT.

(1) Examine cutout lever for freedom of motion; there should be no tendency to stick.
(a) The contact surfaces for correct alignment.
(b) The contact bow spring should just touch the armature without appreciable pressure.
(c) The contact surfaces for a definite rubbing action, after make and before break.
(d) The air gap. With the points just in contact, gap between armature stop and pole should not be less than .045. If it is, the fixed contact should be revised with adjusting washers.

(2) The regulator connection to terminal A should be removed before testing the insulation. Ascertain that the fixed contact support is insulated from the frame by applying 200 v.{VIENNA} A.C. through a low c.p. lamp between it and the armature.

(3) Connect up to a dynamo, a 12 v.{VIENNA} battery, two ammeters A and B, and two voltmeters V and U, the latter voltmeter having a loose lead suitable for touching on terminal B when required. (See diagram).

(4) In a cold condition, and placed in a vertical position, the dynamo shall be driven at gradually increasing speed until the cutout is just operated. The instant of operation will be shown by the needle of ammeter A.{Mr Adams} The readings of the voltmeter V and ammeter B, immediately preceeding this instant shall be noted. The former shall be between the limits 12.2 and 12.8 volts, and the latter shall not exceed .20 A.{Mr Adams} If the cold operating voltage does not fall within the specified limits, adjust the armature by the adj:screw.

(5) Speed up the dynamo to allow a charge of 15 A to the battery for 5 minutes, then the loose lead of voltmeter U should be touched on terminal B, when the reading must not exceed .35 volts, and the points must show no sign of undue heating.

(6) Reduce dynamo speed until the ammeter A reading, is zero, at which point it is assumed, the battery is sufficiently charged to provide a P.D. of at least 12 volts across the shunt coil of the cutout. The connection to this ammeter shall then be reversed after which the speed shall be gradually reduced still further until the cutout contacts fall.
