1044 To: Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 1/h.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 9.2.44. CARRIER ENGINES. (B80 Engines) As you know, we have a contract from the Ministry of Supply to produce prototype Carriers. Owing to rationalisation, 70% of the parts of the Carrier engine are common to the remainder of the Senior Range. If, therefore, we could get 12 engine sets made, we could build any senior range engine at short notice, subject to the crankcase, cylinder head and crank shaft being available. If we could get these twelve engines built, we could incorporate in them many of the simplifications suggested by Psn. and test them out. We could also design some jigs and tools for these engines which would certainly be useful in getting into production if we had anyone at The Clan who knew about jig and tool design. We tried to get Burton from Gallimore some time ago to supervise a small section here on jig and tool work but he could not be spared. You will see from the above that the engine is the one part of the post-war programme with which we can deal on an honest basis at the moment, without obstruction other than our own commitments. Could we have a meeting next week to see what could be done? I attach a copy of the bits we have in stock. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Enclosure.
