POLICY, NAMING AERO

To BJ. RG.{Mr Rowledge} From R.{Sir Henry Royce}
c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} EY. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}

RE. 750 HP. AERO ENGINE.
X.3804
NEW 12-CYL. 6" BORE 7" STROKE ENGINE.
X.3993 X.1775

I suggested to RG.{Mr Rowledge} that we should designate this engine by the hundreds of cub.ins. capacity. In the above case RR.25 would have been used.

The letter 'W' was turned down because of the Napier Lion being called a 'W' engine, instead of broad arrow, and for other reasons.

Now it is suggested 'G', but I think this is bad, because of our already numerous Gs. - G.{Mr Griffiths - Chief Accountant / Mr Gnapp} for Goshawk, 20 HP., and G.l. and G.lll.

It is sad to have so many to please, but may we say some number, such as RR-25., and then modifications follow in letters - i.e. RR.25a., because the letters 'RR' seem that they should stand alone, and not be confused with the type letters. While the engine is about 6" bore and 7" stroke, the 25. will stand for that engine. It does not matter if it means anything or nothing (true to us it is 2,500 cub.ins.capacity)

Supposing there is still objection to such a number, and a letter is wished for, shall we say 'H', so it would be RR.H.1. 2. 3. as modifications are made.
